British Chronology:

June 1, 1781

 

General Cornwallis learns from a captured dispatch that the Virginia Assembly is in Charlottesville, and that Thomas Jefferson, the governor is at his home, Monticello.
He selects Lieutenant Colonel Banastre Tarleton hoping to destroy the government of Virginia.

June 3, 1781

Tarletonís force leaves Cornwallisís camp on the North Anna River
Stops at midday to rest horses.
Stops at Cuckoo Tavern in Louisa County between nine and ten oíclock.
Stops for three hours at a plantation near Louisa County Court House.

June 4, 1781

Tarleton captures 12 wagons and burns them at dawn Tarleton splits forces, one group rides to Castle Hill, the ther to Belvoir where they catch some assemblymen and take them as prisoners.
Rest horses ‡ hour and legend says Dr. Thomas Walker arranged for a large breakfast for the British in order to delay Tarleton. Tarletonís men brush aside a detachment of American cavalry at river outside of Charlottesville, then move into town. Capture several assemblymen, included among them is Daniel Boone, the representative from KY.
Tarleton sends a group led by Captain Kenneth McLeod to climb the mountain and secure Jefferson at his home.
Stay at Monticello for 18 hours but are unsuccessful in their mission.


Colonists' Chronology :
June 3, 1781 Between nine and ten oíclock, Captain Jack Jouett of the 16 th Virgina State Regiment sees Tarletonís troops at Cuckoo Tavern. Jumps on horse and heads toward Monticello.
June 4, 1781

At 4:30 a.m. Jack Jouett crosses the Rivanna River at Milton Ford and rides up the mountain to Monticello. Awakes everyone and warns them of the British approach. Jouett rides to Charlottesville to warn the citizens of the danger. He attracts British attention and is chased allowing General Edward Stevens to escape.
Assembly flees for Stauton while there they elect Thomas Nelson governor since Thomas Jeffersonís term had expired June 2. Jefferson spends time securing papers while family packs for Coleís estate. Captain Chris Hudson, a Continental officer arrives to warn Jefferson that the British have arrived. Jefferson waits for horse to finish being shod. In the meantime he uses his spyglass to pick out the British. Jefferson rides off as British arrive at Monticello from the other side. Rides to Carter plantation at Blendheim and catches up with family. After dinner they move to stay with the Coles

1783 Jack Jouett receives sword for bravery from Virginia Assembly. Receives pair of pistols early in the next century.
