Activities for Students
- In an atlas find the area of Virginia where Louisa, Charlottesville, The Blue Ridge Mountains, and Monticello are located. Find out about the topography of these areas and make a detailed map indicating what you discovered.
- Look in an almanac and find out about the climate of the area around Charlottesville, VA.
Use average temperature charts to discover how warm or cold that June night might have been.
Use star charts to discover how much moonlight there might have been.
- In an atlas from your classroom, library or on the Internet find a detailed map of the area. Copy the map and locate Louisa, Cuckoo, Monticello and Charlottesville. Draw the routes of the British and Jack Jouett and calculate the distances.
- It is said that Sallie was Jack Jouettís thoroughbred horse. Research facts about thoroughbred horses such as their lineage, why theyíre called "thoroughbred," why they are used for racing, how they got to America, their colors, etc. Use this information to draw a picture of how Sallie might have looked.
- Write a letter to the chamber of commerce in Charlottesville, VA requesting information about Monticello and other historic destinations in the area. Use the information you receive to design a travel brochure.
- Study the chronology of events and the characters involved. Write and perform a play about Jack Jouettís ride.
- Use the chronology chart to create two parallel time lines showing the actions of the British and the colonists from June 1-4, 1781.
- Write and illustrate the story of Jack Jouettís ride from Sallieís point of view.
- Find out if Jack Jouett was given any recognition for his effort, if so what was it?
- Make a diorama of Jack Jouettís ride.
- Research the people mentioned in the song and find out about other Revolutionary War battles that took place in Virginia. Were any of these same people involved?
- The most famous ride of the Revolutionary War period was Paul Revereís. Write an essay comparing and contrasting Revereís ride with Jack Jouettís or have the class divide into sides and debate which ride was more important.
- Imagine that you are a Green Dragoon serving with General Tarleton. Write a letter home to your family in England telling them about the events from June 1- June 4, 1781.
- Find out what could have happened if Jack Jouett had not been successful. Prepare an oral report discussing what effect this might have had on the American Revolution.
